Admissions | New Horizon Community School – Leeds

New Horizon Community School is a secondary independent faith school for girls and as such the school’s Admissions Policy reflects its purpose of serving the community. In regards to the Equality Act 2010, those girls from the age of 11 to 16, regardless of any other factor are eligible to make an application for entry. Parents and students are however expected to respect the practises and ethos of the school whilst partaking in school practises. They must be made aware of school policies during the application process. NHCS Governors have a responsibility to ensure applicants are not rejected from enrolment on illegal grounds. The age for admissions is 11 to 16 years. Application Forms can be requested from the school office by telephone or email or collected directly. Parents will be reminded that NHCS is a school that promotes Islamic values and practises. Some information is additionally available through the school prospectus and the school website.

Application Forms must be filled out and returned with an admission fee of £50. New Horizon follows an inclusive approach to education and does not make decisions based on academic levels of ability/achievements. Once an application form is completed and returned, parents/guardians/carers will be informed of an interview which will be arranged with the child. Questions will relate to their experiences in education and their faith. Information will be presented to the Board of Governors who will ensure legislations (in terms of safe guarding
children and the Equality Act 2010) are adhered to. The application is processed within 10 working days and parents are notified in writing if their daughter has acquired a place. During the ten days of waiting, those students applying for a post-primary school will be invited in to sit English, Maths and Science exams but this will not prejudice their application. It will be used to inform staff in advance of their arrival so that plans can be made to deal with any issues.

STUDENT TRANSFER

Those students interested in joining NHCS during the school year will need to apply through the same procedure as stated above. Legislations are in place to protect the rights of children in terms of their welfare which includes education. This must be respected. Once parents and students have bee made aware that their application is successful it is then necessary to expect academic and behavioural reports in reference to students achievements. These will not prejudice the case but will form the basis on an action plan. The admissions procedure must be reviewed annually and reflect the schools ethos. It must also ensure that the interest of children is considered in the shaping of the policy.
